Abstract
The general objective of this research was to Investigate the Effect of Non-Financial Motivation on the performance of public primary school teachers in Tanzania, A case of Ubungo Municipal in Dar es Salaam. The specific objectives of this study were To examine the influence of employee promotion on the performance of public primary school teachers in Ubungo Municipality, to assess the influence of employee recognition on the performance of public primary school teachers in Ubungo Municipality and to examine the influence of working condition on performance of Public Primary School Teachers in Ubungo Municipality. The study adopted a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design.
The population of this study was public primary school teachers working at Ubungo Municipality in Dar es Salaam, with a total number of 339. The sample size of the study was 183 teachers from six primary schools. Respondents were selected using a simple random sampling technique where the study involved primary sources of data, and data were collected through structured questionnaires that were distributed to teachers who were selected as samples. The collected data were entered into an SPSS version 27 and analysed using a linear regression technique to give out the intended results. The findings from this study revealed that non-financial motivation generally affects the performance of public primary school teachers. The study specifically found that employee promotion and employee recognition have an influence on the performance of public primary school teachers at P=0.000 and 0.0000, respectively, while working conditions were found to not influence the performance of public primary school teachers at P=0.927. The study recommended that since employee promotion and employee recognition have influences on the performance of public primary school teachers, employers should take into account the implementation of promotion to teachers in public primary schools once they are in need to improve their teacher’s performance. Also, employers should take time to appreciate, value and recognise the contribution that teachers make in their daily responsibilities this also will help to improve their
performance. In primary schools, working conditions should not be the way to improve teachers’ performance since the majority of respondents concluded that it does not add value to their performance. Further investigation should be done specifically on working conditions using other areas to examine their influence on performance to extend more knowledge on why working conditions do not influence performance under the study area.
